I don't think many of you actually thought there was a chance that Quentin Tarantino would direct STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, but the man himself has proclaimed that it will never happen.
Tarantino was asked at an awards celebration last night if he would be interested in helming one of the new sequels. His response? Not so kind.
“I could so care less,” he responded. So he’s not fan? “No, sorry. Especially if Disney’s going to do it. I’m not interested in the Simon West version of Star Wars.”
Ouch. I am both a STAR WARS and Tarantino fan and while I am not shocked that he doesn't want the job, he doesn't have to be such a douche about it. Sure, QT is probably not a big fan of the mega-studio system, but he is not exactly an outsider when it comes to Hollywood. In fact, you could say that he is the most mainstream indie director out there aside from Kevin Smith.
I would prefer to see STAR WARS: EPISODE VII handled by someone with a little more mainstream focus like one of the Pixar guys. I would rather have my Tarantino movies be bloody, profane, and offensive epics.
MAN OF STEEL and 300 director Zack Snyder has also stated he doesn't want the job either. In an interview with the LA Times, Snyder stated “I don’t think I’d be interested in [directing it],” Snyder said during a recent interview. “I’m a huge ‘Star Wars’ fanatic. I just think doing [episodes] seven, eight and nine is just a slippery slope. It’s a whole other mythological experiment I’m excited to see, but it’s a lot of effort.”
At least with Snyder his reason is more logistical and not dickish. To be honest, I want Snyder nowhere near the STAR WARS franchise. I like the guy, but he is not STAR WARS material.
